Making CO2

To make CO2, you need:

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 envelope (8g) active dry yeast
  • 2 quarts of lukewarm water (40C or 100F)

The mixture should last 2-3 weeks

  • It will make CO2 as long as the liquid is light tan color and cloudy with few slow rising tiny bubbles forming a thin ring on top of the brew. When the mixture turns clear (lemonade like) the fermentation is spent and you should empty it, rinse the bottle thoroughly with the hottest water from the faucet and make another mix.

Mixing yeast with sugar has been known for centuries

As described by Gay-Lussac at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the chemical reaction of fermentation is as follows;

C6H12O6 + Saccharomyces cerevisiae = 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
(Sugar plus yeast yields alcohol and carbon dioxide)

The tail end of the formula is the thing we’re looking for … CO2

God is Good” is the name which yeast was given in the early days of fermentation.

This is prior to the time when Louis Pasteur, in the mid 1800’s, discovered that, in fact there was actually a single cell microscopic organism responsible for the conversion of fermentable barley malt sugars into alcohol, carbon dioxide, and flavor compounds.

  1. Yes, I have the same problem when I use the zoom feature at more than 110%, using the key tool at the upper right corner. I have to change the template of the website to correct that

  2. thank you for replying to my comment. i e-mailed you about my co2 traps yesterday. My first set of traps caught a few bugs, i think i caught the infestation early. However my second set of traps caugh only two bugs. My third set of traps didn’t catch any and when i lit the match to check the gas i didn’t have any. My question is about the water temperature. It it critical in making the co2?

    • Yes, water temperatue must be 104F for best results . Use a themometer. Bacteria is also important. Rinse bottles and instruments used with near boiling water and no traces of soap. Best way to see if bottles are making Co2 is cloudy brew and a thin rig of tiny bubbles on top of liquid. Clear lemonase like brew means it did not work. See “Making Co2” section for detailled recipe.
Do not forget to cover the whole bed to stop all bites immediately

    • @ __ Rocco Goff __ It will make Co2 as long as the liquid is cloudy with few slow rising tiny bubbles forming a thin ring on top of the brew. When the mixture turns clear (like lemonade) the fermentation is spent and you should empty it, rinse the bottle thoroughly with hot water from the faucet and make another mix.

    • @ __ Anne Mitchell Yes, the Co2 is totally safe to use. A trap pruduces the equivalent of the breathing of a small animal (10 pounds) like a cat. It takes 15-20 trap to make the same amount of Co2 as a human being. Traps are totally harmless except for bedbugs.

      • Covered bed with plastic as you directed. Not bitten last night. Made Co2 trap can hear it fizzing, is that right, nothing collected in it yet. Do we need more traps? We dont think we have many of them as when we discovered them a few weeks ago in around the bed and box springs we steamed and killed a lot of them. However I know that was wrong cause we scattered them.(Ive been reading all your information on bed bugs)

      • @__ Anne Mitchell __ The plastic over the bed is an impenetrable shield that stops all bites at once. It is similar to putting a screen in the window for mosquitoes, since bedbugs are in the bed; it put a screen between you and the bedbugs. Take away their food! Excellent.
A fizzing sound means activity in the 2L bottle, that’s what we want. Fermentation makes tiny bubbles in a cloudy brew. To last 2-3 weeks, there should be only a few bubbles forming a thin ring on top of the brew. If you have a lot of bubbles and even foaming, the process will produce all its CO2 at once and will not last. To slow down fermentation we simply use less yeast, try half the yeast next time to see how long it lasts.
It is best to have a trap under each corner of the bed. Bedbugs in the room will be drawn towards the bed and as they will earch it from any angle, they will meet a trap and be attracted to it. For convenience, traps can be made to be out of the way, only the glasses need to be behind the legs under the bed. CO2 can be supplied by ¼” air line tubing coming from a large container containing the brew safely placed also under the bed but against the wall and out of sight.
Steaming is an excellent measure and as you say it killed a lot of them. You gained some time and kept their numbers down. We can get similar results with vacuuming. Finding bedbugs is always followed by intense cleaning activities, what you did is perfectly normal and there was no wrong in it. The bedbugs that escaped will be caught by the traps when they come back and try to feed.
It is up to us to make life difficult for the bedbug by taking their food away from them and catching them through their hunger because once we block it is totally helpless and we can get rid of it. No poison involved.
Tell us more about what you are doing right.

      • Its been 2 nights since we were bitten beds are bug proofed. Nothing in the traps yet, but I did see one walking on the floor in the toilet in the middle of the night, wonder where they have nested. Thanks for all your help, we were desperate.

  3. Thank you so much for this extremely helpful information. You are wonderful. I was wondering how effective is the trap minus a heating source (as opposed to having one inbplace)?

    • @_Wolf___Best to explain how each one works. Bedbugs do not rely on scent to find their prey, they rely on sight. Bedbugs are creatures of the night and have thermal vision. Others call it night vision or infrared vision. Mosquitoes have the same thermal vision to find humans to bite and suck their blood.
So bedbugs see us from a distance as a warm mass of body heat against a cooler and darker room temperature background. That mass of body heat is what they crave the most because it contains all the blood they need to thrive, grow and multiply, it is their only source of food. Heat is a powerful bedbug attractant.
But heat is only good in line of sight and when bedbugs are behind an obstacle or under the bed, they lose that line of sight vision of the heat and have to follow another sign that always bring them to the source of the heat. It is the breathing of the person that sleeps on the bed that show bedbugs where it comes from by cascading from the edge of the bed and down into trails on the floor.
CO2 is heavier than air and always flows down. CO2 absorbs heat and bedbugs with their thermal vision see it as dark trails of smoke that always leads towards the food. Bedbugs follow CO2 coming from our nose. Following CO2 without detecting heat is also a powerful bedbug attractant.
In fact, it is the only two things bedbugs will follow, their life depends on it. Either separately or even better combined telling bedbugs that they found the heat source giving off CO2. Dark wisps and trails of CO2 flowing over our body heat onto the bed and down to the floor. Irresistible.
The most efficient bedbug trap uses natural conditions to lure and catch bedbugs. The CO2 produced by the bottles mixes with the CO2 from the person sleeping on the bed and bedbugs see CO2 from the bottles as a way up into the bed towards where the body heat was last seen. Both attractants work well separately, they are complementary.
The superior attractant is the breathing and body heat of a human, nothing can stop bedbugs from going towards it, nobody ever tried except those who know how to make traps. Since we know where bedbugs go and how they get there, before the bedbugs can reach us we put up an impenetrable bedbug shield, a simple sheet of plastic draped over the whole bed and /or the couch, resting places where bedbugs are to feed on us, but stuck underneath the plastic, bedbugs die of starvation. Loose bedbugs anywhere in the room gets caught by the CO2 traps.
Keep the traps running longer than any bedbug can live and you will be 100% bedbug free. And all that time, without a single bite. No more food for the bugs, end of the bedbug nightmare.

  4. Thank you again I work for a non-profit programs that helps individuals who are chronically homeless obtain permanent housing. Many of our participants have had problems with bed bugs at their respective apartment buildings. I work as a clinical outreach clinician. Thus far, I have personally avoided a bed bug outbreak. However, I have always felt that our management’s position – in the face of office based outbreaks – has been consistently lackluster. I believe I could learn how to build these traps (thanks to your wonderfully detailed site) and then help office staff and clients build their own. I believe this could reduce a lot of overall pain and suffering

    • *Yes, I understand your situation, I was one of the ones you help and I had to make traps to defend myself out of what I got and I had nothing, so I made them out of what I could get, the cheapest materials available even to the poorest of all. And it worked; a simple sheet of plastic draped over the bed stopped all bedbugs from being able to bite me. Every night before going to bed, I was putting this sheet of plastic over my bed before going to sleep. I had my first traps on the floor catching bedbugs everyday and while they were still alive I watched them and studied to find their weaknesses and I found many. *

*An insect that has only one source of food will starve if you take that food away from them. Bedbugs cannot survive without our blood, they cannot molt and cannot lay eggs. The simple fact of draping a sheet of plastic over the bed stops the growth of the colony and neutralize 90% of all the bedbugs. An impenetrable barrier between the bedbug and ourselves, a bedbug shield. It stop all bites at once, even bites from bedbugs in the room that have to climb up in the bed to get to feed. *

*It is a climber with hooks at the end of its legs. If the bedbug excels on fabric, wood, paper, anything with tiny asperities that they can get their hooks into, they are not so good when the surface is hard and smooth like glass which totally stops the bedbug. A bedbug cannot climb out of a simple drinking glass. Anything made of glass is perfect to catch bedbugs, providing that you give them a little bedbug ladder on the outside to help the bedbugs climb up and flip over the edge inside the glass never to get out.And the worse thing in there is that the glass is full of CO2 which chokes them to death in 12-24 hours.*

*It is attracted to the heat of our body and can detect the carbon dioxide in our respiration to be able to always find us wherever we are. So to attract bedbugs towards the glasses we make them overflow with invisible CO2. Only a small amount suffice, the equivalent of the breathing of a small animal like a hamster, it is totally harmless, except for bedbugs. That glass of CO2 is deadly for bedbugs.*

*Your idea of learning and teaching others is admirable. There are lots of possibilities. Yes, staff and clients first would benefit, and from your results, other doors will open. Documenting what we do could become a reference for others and the knowledge would be passed on. Many people are unable to make traps. Clients could be trained to do it for others and bring a great service to the community. I find it very interesting.*

*If you want to feed a man for a day, give him a fish; but if you want to feed him for life, show him how to fish *

      *Excellent*

      *Julien*

  5. One other question..do you know of any on the body deterrents that wod be effective?r For example, I had a client who was living in a homeless shelter that had severe bed bug issues. He said that he uld rubsanitixibg liquid all over his body. He was at the shelter for two years. He rortthat he had never been bitten(even thougndividuals who slept nearbywerepeatedly bitten. I am not bringing up this subject to imply that it could ever replace the traps as an effective way to deal with the bugs.

    • @_Wolf__12/01__Yes, there is a list of natural products that have some slight repellent effect on insects including the bedbug. Cedar is one of them
Traditional methods of repelling and/or killing bedbugs include the use of plants, fungi, and insects (or their extracts), such as:
      • black pepper;
      • black cohosh (Actaea racemosa)
      • Pseudarthria hookeri
      • Laggera alata (Chinese yángmáo cǎo)
      • Eucalyptus saligna oil
      • henna (Lawsonia inermis or camphire)
      • “infused oil of Melolontha vulgaris” (presumably cockchafer)
      • fly agaric (Amanita muscaria)
      • Actaea spp. (e.g. black cohosh)
      • tobacco; “heated oil of Terebinthina” (i.e. true turpentine)
      • wild mint (Mentha arvensis)
      • narrow-leaved pepperwort (Lepidium ruderale)
      • Myrica spp. (e.g. bayberry)
      • Robert geranium (Geranium robertianum); bugbane (Cimicifuga spp.)
      • “herb and seeds of Cannabis”
      • “opulus” berries (possibly maple or European cranberrybush)
      • masked hunter bugs (Reduvius personatus)
      • “and many others”.
They have little if no effect on bedbugs which do not feed daytime being blinded by daylight, and nearly blind cannot find us. Bedbugs that people see daytime are not biting bedbugs but fleeing females leaving the bed to cease being traumatically aggressed by the males. It is a natural scattering phenomena caused by the bedbug behavior which prefer to stay in the bed, close to its source of food.
Bedbugs are not as aggressive as we think. As long as we are standing and moving, bedbugs cannot get on us. They have to wait until we are asleep and unmoving before they dare get on us to feed. Any movement we make stops their bite and they run at four feet a minute to hide in the nearest fold or under a blanket. You can go to heavily bedbug infested places and not get a single one on you if you do not make prolonged contact with bedbug favorite places (beds and couches) and do not stay at the same place for too long. It takes time for bedbugs to get across all the space and obstacles on the floor before they can get to you and if you move, they lose where they are going. On the floor they are really vulnerable and get squished on.
Consumer alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and health care hand alcoholor alcohol hand antiseptic agents, are antiseptic products used to avoid transmission of pathogens. These exist in liquid, foam, and easy-flowing gel formulations. The level of alcohol varies between 60% and 85%. The most commonly used level is 62%.
Alcohol rub sanitizers kill most bacteria, fungi and some viruses. Alcohol rub sanitizers containing at least 70% alcohol (mainly ethyl alcohol) kill 99.9% of the bacteria on hands 30 seconds after application and 99.99% to 99.999%[note 1] in one minute.[3]
When hands are not visibly dirty, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and many other world public health authorities recommend alcohol hand sanitizers as an acceptable alternative to soap and water for hand hygiene.
Alcohol kills bedbugs on contact and it is commonly used to clear bedbugs out of any piece of furniture (bleach also works but leaves discoloration and stains). I do not know how much alcohol repels bedbugs but might there be enough scent left on this gentleman’s skin to deter bedbugs? There is also the fact that 30% of the people do not show any signs of bedbug bites.
I do not mind but encourage you to bring subjects that are not related to the trap. Learning about bedbugs is also learning what works and what does not. There are lots of myths about the bedbug and the only way to sort them out is to find out about them. Some of these products have some qualities that if they cannot get rid of the bedbug can at least bring a relief. There are many ways to eliminate the bedbug and traps is only one of them.
The plastic shield over the bed, all by itself is enough to get rid of bedbugs. It is not as safe and as fast as if you use traps along with the shield but for dirt poor people, it can stop all the bites at once and starve the bedbugs under the plastic in about three months. Ninety days without a bite and all the bedbugs are dead. A plastic over the bed can get rid of a bedbug infestation under 5$ and with a lot of care.
Keep asking questions and we will start to make a trap soon. Find us a place with bedbugs and we will learn by doing it from that one.
      Regards
      Julien

  6. Hi. Thank you for your incredibly helpful and informative website. I have a question about the plastic sheeting to cover the bed and stop bites immediately. What do you recommend for a cot, as it is dangerous to cover the bed rails with plastic – it is a suffocation hazard. My child is 2.5 years old. She is old enough to go to a big bed now anyway, but I wonder if I can treat the cot first.

    • Hi Julie
It is best to clear the cot of its bedbugs instead of covering it with plastic. You are right, used on a child’s bed rails, it could be a suffocation hazard.
Cots have the advantage of being easy to clean, the mattress is usually covered with an impermeable encasement in which bedbugs can’t get. The bedding is easily tossed in the dryer, high heat for 15-20 minutes to kill all possible bedbugs in it.
The frame has few hidden or inaccessible places, even if there are lots of interstices and small corners where bedbugs can hide. That is taken care of by using 70%+ rubbing alcohol which kills bedbugs and eggs on contact. Most people spray until it drips out of the cracks and interstices where wood pieces are joined together. It creates fumes in the room and is is best to open a window and ventilate when you are doing it. Also wear gloves as alcohol dehydrates the skin.
Another method which gives off much less fumes is a small paint brush dipped into alcohol to get only a little alcohol into all the joints and interstices, only filling it so that any bedbug that might be hiding in the crack will be soaked with alcohol and immediately die. Not need to get the surface of the wood wet, only the cracks.
Cots are usually meant to be moved around and not too difficult to handle. Turn the cot upside down on a sheet of plastic on the floor, (to collect debris, residues, dripping and even dead bedbugs, if there were any), Brush all the joints and interstices from the top down. Once you will be done, start from the beginning to see if you covered the whole cot. That will free the frame of all possible bedbugs. Do the same thing to the encasement on the child’s mattress, brush and wipe the outside with alcohol. All cracks, joints and interstices can be filled with wax
The bedding, the mattress and the frame are bedbug free, clear anything else that goes into the cot with similar method, heat or alcohol.
Cots are difficult to access for bedbugs. They rarely touch the walls and have casters under their legs to move the cot around. Since bedbugs cannot hop, jump or fly, they have to crawl all the way around the wheel and find the pivot, make difficult 180 degree turns on hard smooth metal that they have a hard time to hang on to. Casters are not bedbug friendly and can keep bedbugs from being able to climb up the legs of the cot. All we need to protect them from getting bedbugs into are simple bands of scotch tape brushed with talcum powder on its legs. Scotch tape with talcum powder is too smooth and slippery for bedbugs to climb up onto. They lose their grip and fall back down to the floor where traps are waiting for them.
The cot is easy to clear out of bedbugs without a plastic, and keep it clear of bedbugs.
Tell me more about you bedbug situation
      Regards
      Julien

  7. Hi Julien, Thanks so much for your reply. It was good to hear your take on how to treat the cot. That had been my plan – to treat the entire cot with 90% rubbing alcohol, including the mattress. The mattress has plastic on top, but not underneath or the sides which are fabric, so I was going to seal it in black plastic from garbage bags (basically a cheap encasement) which should last until my daughter goes into a big bed (another few months), hopefully by which time the bed bugs will be gone.

Our bed bug situation!!! Well how long have you got! I have had the exterminators in twice previously, the last time we moved as well. Can I tell you, if I had found this website back then, it would have saved much heartache. Although we would have had to move anyway, as the landlord was making life hard for us. I never mentioned bed bugs to the landlord because i just couldn’t face the pain and accusations.

The last infestation was at our last place in March 2012. We moved out, taking all our belongings with us, treating them with heat or freezing them, and if I did not have time to treat them, they were sealed in black plastic and labelled. I threw out all furniture in the bedroom where my daughter and I slept. I had that place treated with permerthrin (exterminator hired) after it was empty.

The new apartment is concrete walls and tiled floor throughout and we have metal beds (including the cot). All the sealed plastic bags from the last infestation are still in the garage at the new place, and the garage adjoins the apartment.

My 2.5 year old daughter started getting bites again about 2 weeks ago. I don’t have any bites and I do react. I found your website last weekend and started your step by step plan a few days ago.

It is a slow process for me as a I am single mum with no baby-sitting for my daughter except for daycare 2 days a week and because my car is on the blink it takes an hour to get there and back twice a day.

Anyway, so as of last night at 12am I have got my daughter’s bedroom completely taped at the base of each wall, 2 inches up, using Scotch masking tape and shiny plastic tape brushed with talcum powder. Sealed all cracks at this level using the same method. Also the two doorways that adjoin the bedroom, taped at the floor level with the same method and brushed with talcum powder. I have got 2 traps under her bed but never seen any bugs but I think this could be due to using cornflour, which I have realised is nowhere near as effective as talcum powder (I mistakenly thought they were the same thing as I use cornflour in my daughter’s nappy).

I slept my daughter in my bed last night which is in another room, adjoining hers,

So I fell asleep on the lounge last night, awoke at 1pm and saw a bed bug crawling across the floor & killed it. This morning I vacuumed the lounge floor and saw 2 more. I am pretty sure they are in the lounge as I was vacuuming under the lounge just before I saw them. I killed three more immature bed bugs on stuff under the lounge. Threw everything under and on the lounge (think toys) in a black plastic bag with talcum powder and sealed it.

My next plan of attack had been to alcohol treat the cot & mattress, and place 4 traps underneath it with talcum powder. I now have no idea what to do with the lounge. It is an Ikea klippan, they come with removable covers. There is no cover presently on and hasn’t been for a few months. It was treated with permethrin underneath, in March 2012. I wonder if I should just treat with rubbing alcohol, and re-cover it. The bed bugs came out today when I moved the toys under the lounge, thinking that possibly that’s where they were nesting as perhaps the lounge was too inhospitable and of course the cot is metal and my bed is metal.

I would appreciate your thoughts on all of the above.

My next daycare is on Wednesday (it’s now Saturday 8th Dec), it is hard to carry out these activities with a 2 year old in tow especially when dealing with dangerous chemicals. I may be able to ask for urgent assistance / care for my daughter while I continue the treatment. Do you consider this urgent, or do you think we won’t make things worse if we wait until Wednesday?

    • _____ Julie__ It was good to hear your take on how to treat the cot. That had been my plan – to treat the entire cot with 90% rubbing alcohol, including the mattress. Good. First , we stop the bite. We start by taking care of the resting places where bedbugs can bite.
      • Your child’s cot
      • Your bed
      • The lounge
Cheap homemade encasements are the best to fight bedbugs. They fit better and are more adapted to the shapes that need bedbug protection. You can also use the blue recycling bags which are not as ugly as black ones. Any place or corner that feels of looks weak can be strengthen with 2” clear wrapping tape. The same tape can secure loose plastic and keep it from being a suffocation hazard where your daughter might be around it.

_____ Julie__ Our bed bug situation!!!

You have been fighting bedbugs for a long time, suffered a lot from them and the reaction they cause in people, nothing good comes from the bedbug. This is the last time Julie, getting rid of the actual bedbugs will show you how to get rid of them permanently. You will never have a bedbug infestation again because you will be able to defend yourself and catch the very first ones even before they can bite.

_____ Julie__ The last infestation was at our last place in March 2012.

Heat and /or freezing might be misleading and not have killed all bedbugs. Heat requires temperature of at least 120F, 30 minutes to an hour while cold takes five days at minus 20F. It is best to go at minus 32F to kill bedbugs in minutes. Too bad about the furniture, it probably could have been saved, nothing we can do about it except make sure it never happens again.

_____ Julie__ The new apartment is concrete walls and tiled floor throughout and we have metal beds (including the cot). All the sealed plastic bags from the last infestation are still in the garage at the new place, and the garage adjoins the apartment.

Concrete walls are excellent surfaces for bedbugs to travel on. They have a multitude of asperities that bedbugs can use to climb up and reach the ceiling and drop down over the beds. Your efforts will not be in vain with the band of shiny smooth tape that you have laboriously placed at the bottom of the walls, you will appreciate it to clear bedbugs out of your belongings, your furniture and out of the room. Bedbugs will be able to come out of hiding but will not be able to go back.
Metal beds are the best to turn bedbug –proof. Metal is difficult for bedbugs to travel on. It is an advantage.
Sealed plastic bags can be emptied outside or over a plastic to brush them out of bedbugs. There cannot be any eggs in a long time sealed plastic bag. We will take care of those items once the beds and lounge will be protected with plastic and traps.
The garage gives a possibility of killing bedbugs with heat or even better and less expensive this winter with the help of Mother Nature. It might be convenient for you to use it at some point. We will keep it in mind.

_____ Julie__ My 2.5 year old daughter started getting bites again about 2 weeks ago. I don’t have any bites and I do react. I found your website last weekend and started your step by step plan a few days ago.

I use bites as information to find where bedbugs are. Few bites means few bedbugs and in your case, it seems that they still are in gathered in a single area but moving to follow their food. Knowing that the infestation is recent is a plus as it is easier to stop a bedbug infestation before the nymphs mature and can lay eggs. We will go through the step by step together doing the essential first and the best use of your time.

_____ Julie__ It is a slow process for me as a I am single mum with no baby-sitting for my daughter except for daycare 2 days a week and because my car is on the blink it takes an hour to get there and back twice a day.

It is a slow process anyway. Getting rid of bedbugs has to follow their instincts and their hunger. Bedbugs are impossible to find when they are hiding and can only be caught when they come out to try to feed. It is then that they are vulnerable and easy to catch. It is amazing that an insect that causes such emotional distress can be so defenceless.

_____ Julie__ Anyway, so as of last night at 12am I have got my daughter’s bedroom completely taped at the base of each wall, 2 inches up, using Scotch masking tape and shiny plastic tape brushed with talcum powder. Sealed all cracks at this level using the same method. Also the two doorways that adjoin the bedroom, taped at the floor level with the same method and brushed with talcum powder.

Yes, as I said above, this scotch tape brushed with talcum powder (baby powder) is too smooth and too slippery when brushed with talcum powder for bedbugs to hang on to its shiny surface and bedbugs lose their grip and fall back down to the floor where traps are waiting for them.

_____ Julie__ I have got 2 traps under her bed but never seen any bugs but I think this could be due to using cornflour, which I have realised is nowhere near as effective as talcum powder (I mistakenly thought they were the same thing as I use cornflour in my daughter’s nappy).

An even more effective trap is made with the same CO2 bottles but with straws to bring the CO2 into a small shot (1 oz) glasses in which bedbugs will fall never to get out again. These traps using straws are much quicker and easier to make, much better than plastic baskets. Glass does not require talcum powder in case you do not have any. The shorter, smaller glasses can be put under the legs of the begs and the bottles out of the way so that they do not get knocked off and spill their content on the floor. They are also easier to handle and verify for bedbugs in them. Please make any other traps using straws or an air line tubing. We will talk more about these traps when you will be ready to make some more after the beds and the lounge will be covered.

_____ Julie__ I slept my daughter in my bed last night which is in another room, adjoining hers,

After the cot, the bed is the next item that we will take care of by covering it safely with plastic. If there are bedbugs in it, the plastic will go on top of the mattress and if it is free of bedbugs it will go between the mattress and box spring or it might not need any.

_____ Julie__ So I fell asleep on the lounge last night, awoke at 1pm and saw a bed bug crawling across the floor & killed it.

Information supplied by bedbugs. The main spots where you have bedbugs is the lounge. It must be cleared out of all bedbugs or covered and sealed with plastic.

_____ Julie__ My next plan of attack had been to alcohol treat the cot & mattress, and place 4 traps underneath it with talcum powder.

Your plan for the cot is good, add waxing of the interstices, crevices and corners to seal in any bedbug or egg that could have been missed by alcohol. An extra precaution that is totally safe for your child.
An Ikea Kipplan lounge could be difficult to treat with alcohol and wax as it is not as open and accessible as the wood rails and frame of the cot. Removable covers are excellent as they can be treated with heat in a dryer. It might be easier to cover the lounge with plastic and make it comfortable for daily use protected from bedbugs inside of it by the plastic. I recently made a video showing how to cover a couch. It took me less than an hour to do it, maybe you could do it in two hours once you have all the materials needed. I need to know your availability to do it. If for reasons of convenience you cannot do it quickly, we will use some other way. It will not be as neat as the couch cover in the video but will give you the same protection.

_____ Julie__ I would appreciate your thoughts on all of the above.

_____ Julie__ My next daycare is on Wednesday (it’s now Saturday 8th Dec), it is hard to carry out these activities with a 2 year old in tow especially when dealing with dangerous chemicals. I may be able to ask for urgent assistance / care for my daughter while I continue the treatment. Do you consider this urgent, or do you think we won’t make things worse if we wait until Wednesday?

Yes, you will need some time to do these things:
      • The cot
      • The bed
      • The lounge
      • Traps and maintain traps
But it is a one time only and can all be done the same day. Once the cot, bed and lounge will be covered, even if you do not have the traps, you will be able to take a break and be able to take care of something else in your life other than bedbugs. When the bites stop, you start winning the war. It is not the number of caught bedbugs that matters but the number of bites stopped.Everytime a bedbug is kept from feeding, it is stopped from molting, from laying eggs and from multiplying. Every time the bedbug tries to feed it is caught by a trap and eliminated. Even the most tenacious bedbugs cannot last as long as traps.

I just received a bedbug count from Switzerland, a thousand bedbugs caught with traps and thousands more starved underneath the plastic of a young four member family. From 3000-5000 bedbugs to zero in ten weeks and hardly without a bite. They are getting ready to have a very nice X-Mas bedbug free!

Review this new information, get the materials needed, we can make a list and get ready for your first opportunity which could be Wednesday. It is not an emergency yet, you will not receive many bedbug bites meanwhile if you are careful, inspecting your bed and using fresh bedding every night with your daughter sleeping with you till then. It is not the best situation but it is realistic and will allow you to have get ready and proceed when you have a chance to do it.

We have a few days and I would like to follow your progress, give you details you might need and be available for you on Wednesday when you will make your place impossible for bedbugs to live in. After that, the traps will collect bedbugs while you will be able to take care of things other than bedbugs. There is not enough time to get all the bedbugs for X-Mas but I can guarantee you that it will be without a bite.

To get rid of bedbugs permanently, we will use your greatest power, your hands and your mind.

      Your thoughts

      Julien

      • Hi Julien

Thank you so much for your time, your information and your offer to help. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to reply sooner. Life got very hectic before Christmas and we were away from 22 Dec to 8 Jan.

Well anyway, we have had some pleasing results!!

My daughter stopped getting bites about a week before we left for Christmas holidays with family.

When we got back I have found both traps under her bed have several bugs in various stages!!!!

And she has had no bites since then which is about 7 days.

So I am very encouraged and incredibly grateful to you for your wonderful site and your tireless efforts to inform the masses about the basic things you can do to be free of this problem. No thanks to the pest control companies who like to scare you into spending a kings ransom on poison!!!

Anyway, I will continue with the treatment of the cot just to be sure, but unless I see bites I’ll do it at my own pace. My toddler is incredibly active and keeping up with her is a full time job!!

I will keep you posted of our progress!! Thanks again.

        God bless

        Julie

  8. Hello,

Is there any danger to creating this CO2 trap with sugar, yeast and water? i.e., is it powerful enough to explode, especially if done incorrectly?

    • Hi Jesse
There is absolutely no danger in making a CO2 bedbug trap.
      • The quantity of CO2 is the equivalent of a small animal, like a hamster. It takes 300 traps to produce the equivalent of the breathing of a human and over 20 000 traps before the CO2 reaches harmful levels.
      • Fermentation is not powerful enough to make soda bottles explode and it is impossible since there is a hole in the cap to let out the CO2 as soon as it is produced.
The only danger of these bottles could be that some people would drink it and get slightly drunk. It also produces alcohol at 8% to 12% and can be consumed safely like an ordinary homemade wine. I would not drink it as it probably tasteless with the idea that it has been used to catch bedbugs with it.
We use it to attract bedbugs as it produces the right amount of CO2 that will last for weeks and in some cases months. To be efficient, a bedbug trap must last longer than any bedbug, quietly under the bed like a sentinel.

  9. @ Julie __ 2013.01.13 ___
Greetings to you Julie and to your little one,
I am very pleased by your news and that you could have your Holidays without worrying about bedbugs. While you were away, some of them died of suffocation in your traps. And they suffered; it took them 12-24 hours to do so. If the traps are totally harmless, it is not the case inside the glass pitfalls where CO2 accumulate like in a little pool and deprived of oxygen the bedbugs they cannot breathe and die. It is not a nice way to die but they deserve it so much that I enjoy it every time someone tells me that he/she killed some! Good show!
A simple demonstration that all you have to do is set up the traps, shield and barriers if you can, and then let the bedbugs be stupid enough to eliminate themselves.
I’m a grandfather; my little one is three, a sweetie and a ball of fire. Your little tornado probably is the same When they are healthy and well taken care of, that’s what happens to toddler. Precious new life.
So it means that since December 17th or so she did not get a bite. Excellent! How about you, doing okay?
In a previous message I said that bedbugs are slow Trying to get rid of them faster only creates problems and worries and it is best that you do it, as you say, at your own pace. On my website, I say that the first thing to do is to stop bites and that is what you did. You are doing good.
If you are willing, we will continue to have a look at what can be done to make it better and I’m thinking about your bed and the lounge. There are inexpensive things that can be done and that takes only a few hours now and then. Please keep me informed of the situation so that we can take appropriate measures to get rid of the problems. It is not the bedbugs that matters but your welfare and of course of your little one.
Bedbugs do not have to be a nightmare, simply a mere annoyance, but that you still want to get rid of.
    Best regards
    Julien

  10. I made traps with tubing and two of traps seem to have overflowed some of the lquid mixture into the bowl– it’s a floury/waterish type substance…so I’m thinking it’s some of the yeast still rising (this was the first night) — is this normal? I didn’t shake the bottle up too much when I added the yeast to the sugar water…so maybe I didn’t mix it enough, and the yeast stayed primarily at the top. thoughts? for what it’s worth…caught 4, regardless, last night. yeeeeeah! nice site!

  11. Hi Jules,

I am thankful that I came across your site. It So much information and I watched a few of the videos. I have a few questions. I bought mattress covers, but I notice you did not encase the mattresses — i.e. cover entire mattress and tape ends shut. I was about to to do that but if I did—

Wouldn’t the bed bugs just climb up on top of the plastic and continue as usual? Where can I buy dry ice and how do I use it on the mattress?

As you have shown, the plastic cover should be left hanging, so that the BBs will crawl under and get trapped between the plastic and the mattress. So it seems it is best not to encase but to just drape the plastic cover.

Also, I planned on vacuuming the box spring. Most sites said to rip the cloth cover off the box spring and vaccuum, then use a steamer to kill. But I was going to kill them first with Clorox spray, then vaccuum then steam. Will I still need to do this if I plan on using a plastic cover?

Just some background. Discovered bedbugs colony on daughters bed back in March 2013. Moved here July 2012. Got rid of bed. Then saw them in the hallway and steps to downstairs. Cloroxed them and used duck tape on wood baseboards on floor. Love duck tape. Few still come out of untaped crevices. Just caulked those. This is a 3-bedroom home. Bugs are in all three bedrooms plus couch downstairs and see a few in bathroom. Have since been using Clorox Cleanu -up (best stuff ever, but hope I don’t wind up with lung cancer!!!) , Diotomaceous Earth and just bought vaccum and steamer used on couch.

Plan of attack: cover all three bedroom mattresses. Make CO2 traps for each room. Cover couch. Plan to buy more tape and shake talcum powder— Anything else?

Thanks in advance for your response,

    Lynda

    • Hi Lynda,
I can see you have a sharp mind; it is your best weapon against bedbugs.
You are right about bedbugs being able to just climb up on the plastic and continue as usual. A mattress encasement will only trap bedbugs which are in the mattress and do nothing for all the other bedbugs which are not in the mattress. A mattress encasement only brings a temporary relief while the bedbug colony continues to grow outside of the encasement. But since you already have the encasement, we can use it to make a shield. Use the encasement and tape the plastic sides that will stop bedbugs to the sides of the encasement. It will be just as good as the shield I show in “The Bedbug Shield” video.
Dry ice can be found by doing a Google search, type “Dry ice + the name of your city” to see all dry ice suppliers in your area. Dry ice is commonly found in supermarkets, fish stores and ice cream parlors. Dry ice can kill bedbugs in 24 hours inside a sealed plastic, to use it on your mattress, simply seal it in your encasement making sure it is absolutely airtight (use clear wrapping tape to seal small openings if any) and place 3-5 pounds of dry ice in it. Place the sealed mattress against a wall and poke 20-30 needle holes at the highest point on top to let air escape. The encasement will fill with nearly pure CO2 which at those concentrations is lethal for bedbugs, but becomes harmless as soon as you open the plastic to let out the CO2.
You well understand the idea of letting the plastic hang so that bedbugs will crawl underneath it and get trapped between the plastic and the mattress. It stops all bedbugs, no matter if they already are in the bed or elsewhere in the room. Bedbugs stuck under a shield cannot bite. Without our blood to feed on, bedbugs cannot molt and grow, and they cannot lay eggs and multiply. Without our blood, bedbugs can only wither and die of starvation. The shield is perfect to stop and eliminate bedbugs while you sleep without a bite.
You can vacuum the box spring if you want to, but it is not needed. In fact, with all the heavy work of moving everything around it can make some bedbug escape and flee, scattering them in the room. It is much easier to let them where they are under the shield and make them slowly die of starvation. It is the same thing with most of the work we do to fight bedbugs, while we toil in one spot, bedbugs close by will try to flee and some will. Clorox kills a few bedbugs by direct application and make others flee; it can also damage and stain the finish on wood surfaces.
With a bedbug shield and traps, you do not have to do any of those things anymore. We simply wait for bedbugs to come out of hiding to catch them and leave our belongings nearly without any trace of bedbugs. The only work involved is making the shield and the traps, and then take a long break while bedbugs eliminate themselves through hunger.
Ouch, you went deep in the bedbug nightmare. And all the work you did trying to fight them. There was no need for all of that, all you ever needed was a shield and traps, and now you have them. Follow your plan, it always works. Shields on the beds and couch, and traps to catch bedbugs on the floor. Traps are so inexpensive that you can make a dozen if you like and place them in strategic spot where bedbugs can be.
Check “The Bedbug Shield” to see how you can make a shield comfortable by using fabric on the top of the mattresses where we sleep and on top of the couch where we sit and rest having only the hanging sides made of plastic.
Keep us informed of your progress and results so that others will read what you did and find how they can fight back and win over bedbugs.
I am pleased to share with you.
      JulesNoise

  12. Jules, Thanks so much for your prompt response. I made shields for all three beds and for the couch. I will say that the best plastic covers came from Uhaul. I previously bought mattress covers from Home Depot, intending on encaseing the mattress, but I notice they have pre-made holes in them. I had to get duck tape and cover all the holes, for now, but will replace with Uhaul covers.

I will get all the supplies for the CO2 traps tomorrow and look forward to letting you know my results.

Once again, I am so glad I found your website! You have the best, proven results out there on the planet!

    Cheers! –Lynda

    • Hi Lynda,

Sounds good. The most important part of the trap is the shield. It is the shield that will stop all bedbug bites at once and without our blood to feed on, the bedbug cannot live long, it spends all its energy and reserves uselessly trying to find a way through the shield, withers and flattens to finally die of starvation within a few weeks while you sleep soundly without a bite.

Plastic covers from UHaul, very ingenious. You probably have the sturdiest bedbug shield of all. Excellent initiative. As long as the edges of the sides are hanging down all around the beds and couch and cut about an inch over the floor, you have a perfect bedbug shield. From this point on, you shouldn t have any more bites. If you do get bites in spite of the shield, it will only show you where there is a weakness in the shield or a pathway bedbug can use to get past the shield and onto the topside of the bed, like sheets touching the walls or the floor.

The shield takes care of all bedbugs already in the bed (70,4%) and in the couch (23.6%). With the traps we now take care of bedbugs anywhere else in the room (7%). The combination of the shield on the bed and couch, and the traps on the floor takes care of 100% of all bedbugs and eliminate them one by one until there are none left. We use their own hunger against them and they never become resistant to that.

Once the (8) traps will be completed and in place, you will be able to take a long break and return to your normal life without worrying about bedbugs other than maintaining the shields and traps once in a while. Most people check every day at first and slowly get to once a week, and with the lack of bites almost forget that the bedbug traps are still running. It becomes obvious one day that there are no more bedbug, no bedbugs, no bites, no sign of bedbug presence. You will have quietly won the war and remove the plastic to live a life without bedbugs.

I am not conceited Lynda but after three years of making traps and the thousands of positive replies from people who made their own trap as you do there is no doubt in my mind that it is the best in the world. The fact that it is also the least expensive makes it even better. It is not worth spending hundreds of dollar on an insect that you can defeat simply by keeping it from feeding on our blood.

Bothered by bedbugs? Do as Lynda did, shields up!

      Julien

  13. Hey there Jules,

Lynda again. I have a couple of questions. Do you know if a central air system installed in a home can be a central source of the infestation?

I ask because I suspect they could be living in the small tight room where the boiler is. It is very warm in there. And lately it smells very musty. There is some leaky water (very minimal though) from the pipe in the bathroom above. Plus my sons room is right above the boiler unit and his room it smelling just like the boiler room. This is a duplex styled property.

Also I am starting to see at least one bug all over the house. Today I killed one in the little walkway leading into the kitchen. This is a rental and I am ready to get out of here. I know people say don’t leave but I can’t take it. I am trying to remain level headed. The other apts I’ve been in in previous years either had mice and/or roaches (very small problem) . But for some reason I could put up with them although I battled and won with those critters. But bedbugs make me want to just up and leave. Your thoughts?

  14. Hey Jules,

I got an answer to my own question above. I finally saw one coming out of the upper vent. There are two vents close to the ceiling and two close the floor.

So there is a possibility that the BBs are travelling to each room through the vents! Well here’s what I immediately did. I used sealing tape (the one that is heavy like duct tape but is clear with fibers in it ) around the outside of the vents because there are gaps between the edges of the vents and the walls. I closed the vent and taped the area on the slider that opens and closes the vents with tape as well. People should know that tape is wonderful because the BBs get trapped on them and die.

However, come winter time, I will need to open them back up for the heat to flow. I got a solution for that. I have some some screen mesh where the holes are small and hopefully small enough to keep them from still travelling out of the ceiling and into the room. I plan to just cover the vent area with the mesh yet still allow the heat to flow in, though it may be reduced in flow.

By the way, the minute I made the shields, I have not seen any on the bed in any of the rooms. I bought all the ingredients for the CO2 and am now ready to make those for each room.

Bless your heart Jules for sharing this information with the world. I am so thankful that I found your website!

  15. Thanks so much! I am so excited to try this! Have couple questions. Is twine tying around the plastic sheet necessary, as you indicated on your other link? All we have is a box spring and mattress directly on floor, with no headboard. I wanted to just lay the plastic over everything and leave it approx 2 inches from floor, and then put our fitted sheet set over that. Is that ok?

Also, I have come across some comments that talcum powder in the trap can repel the bugs? Any merit to that?

I have also seen a couple sites claiming they had bed bugs able to crawl out of a glass cup. What do you think about that? Would a coffee mug be best?

Do you recommend a heating pad with the traps that are placed by human occupied beds?

Lastly, our kids will be away for a few days. We want to place the traps around their beds while they are gone. How many days will it take to eliminate all the bugs from their room?

    Thanks again!

  16. HI i live in an apartment complex and am dealing with this problem. So far they have heat treated my place twice yet just last night I found some more, obviously they are coming from somewhere else I am going to attempt your method and cover my cot with plastic placing the traps underneath, my guess is I will have to do this until I leave this apartment complex any advice would be appreciated.

    • @__B aka Megalinuxer,

Yes, covering your cot will work because it is a shield that will keep bedbugs from being able to feed. If bedbugs can’t feed, they cannot molt and grow, they absolutely need blood to do that. Adult bedbugs cannot incubate and lay eggs without blood, so with a shield they cannot multiply. And last but not least, without blood, bedbugs simply cannot survive and die of starvation while you rest and sleep without a bite.

You see, a heat treatment is not 100% proof against bedbugs. If heat is an excellent method to kill bedbugs, it must be done quickly, meaning that the temperature must be raised over 120°F very fast, not only in the middle of the room but within every outside wall or bedbugs will feel the heat and try to avoid it by going away from it, deeper in the walls and the structure where it is cooler and will not be baked to death. Some will even be able to get out of the apartment, maybe to the neighbors and will come back later when the room has cooled down. Most companies add a preventive pesticide treatment to kill bedbugs that might have survived the heat. Back to square one, most bedbugs are now resistant to pesticides. It is the old way to fight bedbugs, cook and poison the whole place to kill a few bedbugs with all the problems it brings to people.

It is so much easier to deal with bedbugs if instead of chasing them you use their natural tendencies against them. Everybody knows that it is about impossible to keep bedbugs away from us. Try as you may, they seem to always find a way to hide and elude us and sneak back on us to feed on our blood while we sleep. It drives people insane, making us do stupid things in emotional distress. It is the bedbug nightmare. So think about it, if we cannot get rid of them by fighting them, instead beat them at their own game.

If you had mosquito bites, what would you do? Wouldn’t you put a screen in the window or a net over the bed? That always stop mosquitoes from being able to bite. But we are mot dealing with mosquitoes but with bedbugs, and where are those bedbugs? They are called bedbugs because 93% of them are in the bed. So the screen or net that you need should be on the bed, between the bedbugs and yourself.

A bedbug shield is an impenetrable barrier that no bedbug can get across or around. Oh wonder of it all, anybody can make a bedbug shield with the simplest of materials around, a simple plastic draped over the places where you rest or sleep. It will stop all bedbugs from being able to bite. And bedbugs are stupid, they will get underneath it all by themselves and get stuck without any chance of reaching their goal which is feeding on your blood. What happens to bedbugs that cannot feed? Like any other living creature, if they cannot feed, they die.

A bedbug shield can be a simple vertical strip of plastic fixed to a fabric cover fitted to a bed, a cot, an armchair or a couch. The top does not have to be plastic as the fabric will stop any bedbug from being able to get through. A fabric top is also much more comfortable than plastic and much less slippery, only the vertical sides have to be made of plastic because bedbugs have a hard time walking on a smooth vertical surface but mostly because they cannot negotiate the 180° turn at the edge and always fall on the floor when they try. So it is where we place CO2 bedbug traps to catch them when it happens.

The best part is that you can live in a bedbug infested place (apartment complex) and be free from bedbug bites, eliminating them one by one without any effort whenever they come in from the outside or antwhere else in the room.

This is done without poison, without any costly “help” from so-called experts and without the worries and harassement someone can get from the other tenants and the landlord.

Ask a good seamstress to make a fabric cover that will fit on your cot, add a simple strip of plastic to the hanging edges and you will have a permanent protection against bedbugs, against any and all bedbugs. That’s a fact, undeniable because it is natural and it works every time. Let the bedbugs do the work for you and use the shield to stop all bedbug bites at once.

It is the oldest trick in the world, check the Tantalus Torment in Greek mythology, so close to their food and never able to get it.

      Take care
      JulesNoise

  17. Hi Jules,

I am going to try the traps but wanted to ask if they are safe for pets. I have a cat. Just want to know if it is safe for her if she knocks it over. Pretty sure she won’t knock them over as her focus is centered around treats (lol), but just a precaution.

Also, do you think plastic containers filled with mineral oil under the legs would stop the bugs from crawling up as well? ….and lastly….

What is your opinion on Diatomaceous Earth?

    • Hi Kimmi,

The traps are totally safe for pets as well as for children, babies, pregnant women, elderly people, the ailing and of course you and me. But pesticides are not. There are absolutely no chemicals in the traps, they use the same yeast used to make bread, edible sugar and potable water, nothing else. The end product of fermentation is alcohol (8-12%) of dubitable taste which is also harmless unless you drink too much of it (I simply discard it) and CO2 which is what we use to attract bedbugs since it is similar to the CO2 we exhale in our respiration.

Cats have a natural defense against bedbugs with their fur. Bedbugs being flat and thin when unfed cannot travel through hair and cannot bite them. Every furry aninals is similarly protected. Your cat will smell the odor of baked bread from a recent mix and also the slight scent of alcohol when the mix will be spent and will quickly be indifferent to it.

Knocking a mixture over mix make a sticky spot from the sugar but easily washed off with warm soapy water, that’s why it is best to place the traps under the bed and behind each leg of the bed, It is also the best place to put traps since bedbugs use the legs of the bed to climb up in the bed.

Plastic containers filled with mineral oil under the legs will stop the bugs from crawling up but could make a worse spot than bottles if they leak. I suggest using bedbug barriers on the legs of the bed instead of anything under the legs. Bedbug barriers are simple bands of transparent scotch tape around the legs of the bed, legs of the furniture, above the baseboards of the walls around the trims of the doors and the closets, around switch plates, radiators, in drawers, on desk chairs, on work desks, around potted plants, … and the list goes on, where you do not want bedbugs to be able to climb. Much more versatile and out of sight than containers, commercial or not, under legs. Simple and inexpensive, bedbug barriers keep bedbugs from anywhere you want. Bedbugs cannot hang on to the vertical surface of scotch tape when it is brushed with talcum powder, they slip, they slide , they fall and always end up on the floor where you strategically place a bedbug trap. Bedbug barriers gets rid of bedbugs anywhere else in the romm by sending them down into CO2 traps.

Bedbugs are particulatly susceptible to dessication since they cannot drink, any moisture bedbugs have comes from the drop of blood they take, DE is a passive non-poisonous pesticide. The problem with DE is that it does not kill bedbugs quickly and they can still bites and lay eggs even if they walk in it repeatedly. Another negative side of DE is that it is a powder that is spread in the wrong places and most bedbugs do not walk in it. Bedbugs are named bedbugs because they are mainly in the bed and that is where DE should be, on and under the mattress, in every joint and interstices of the box spring, in the bed frame and the headboard and a few feet all around the bed and should not be removed. This means that you will be sleeping and rolling in DE for a few months without being to vacuum or clean up. The best place to use DE is on a farm. Why do they use DE in human dwellings? Because it was the only alternative to poison.

Use the bedbug shield on the bed, it will stop all bedbug bites at once. Use the traps on the floor , they will catch any and all foraging bedbugs. Use bedbug barriers, they will keep bedbugs from being able to go anywhere else in the room. Let the whole system draw bedbugs out of hiding and you will be completely rid of them.

The bedbug trap is free and the materials to make your own, Shield, Traps and Barriers will not cost you more than ten dollars. Once you will know how to make your own bedbug trap, bedbugs will never bother you again.

  18. Also Jules, do I put the traps in rooms where we are not getting bit? Is that a smart thing to do since it will bring and infestation into a room where they may not be?

    • @__Kimmi,

CO2 bedbug traps will not make bedbug migrate from one room to the other. Bedbugs prefer to stay close to the source of food they can detect on the room they are in.

But a CO2 bedbug trap is also a monitor, a way to detect bedbug presence by catching the few ones that might have moved to another room. When I ise traps in a room in a place where no bedbugs are detected, I call the trap a sentinel against infestation. Nothing is more satisfying that catching the very first bedbug before it can lay eggs.

  19. Hi Jules,

Its been a good while since I commented. I wanted to check in and let you know that again I am so glad I found your website. I covered our couches and beds in the beginning of June and had very good results since!!! I still have Diotomaceous Earth on my rug from that time at the bottom of the wall covered by one side of the bed. Other than that I still check and found three to five extremely small bugs on my daughters pillow. I smashed them, but noticed their blood was almost a dark brown, which means they were on their way to dying out. They weren’t even full sized. They looked like ink spots. That probably happened because my daughters wooden bed posts were still exposed. Silly me. So, I immediately put another plastic cover over the entire bed with the posts covered and let it drape down over the entire bed. Now we are complete. Those bugs kept me up for days and nights we they came out in March ’13, but since June, I went back to normal. Anyone who I come across and has this problem, I send them directly to your site!!!

    • Hi Lynda,

There is no perfect way to eliminate bedbugs, we can oversee a small detail here and there and find bedbugs later down the line.

But actually it is no big deal as when it happens, we use it as information and correct the situation as you did, and life return to normal without living the bedbug nightmare again.

You did good and do not look threatened by bedbugs anymore. It is a mere annoyance that can easily dealt with.

A trick for the exposed wooden bed posts could be to treat them with 91% rubbing alcohol to kill them and them wax them to entomb any bedbugs that still might be in the cracks. Scotch tape brushed with talcum powder can be used to make bedbug barriers and keep bedbugs from being able to climb up on exposed surfaces.

Dark like ink means used up blood and bedbugs in need for a new blood meal, those bedbugs did not had a chance to bite.

      • Thanks Jules. It was a big difference to find from your website only that the bugs could be taken care of with simple items. I did several hours of research before I found your site and all the other information was endless stories of people who were in the same boat I was in and recommendations of several products, how the landlords blamed it on renters for the bedbugs and that it costs thousands of dollars to treat which only worked for a while before the bedbugs came back.

It truly takes us to learn how to think for ourselves again and learn how to tackle problems instead of relying on “going to someone else to fix the problem”. That comes in handy at time, but most things can be tackled by ourselves and you’ve taught that though your website.

        Happy Holidays to ya!

      • Thank you Lynda Your comment is very appreciated. It is so true that it truly takes us to learn how to think for ourselves again and learn how to tackle problems instead of relying on “going to someone else to fix the problem”. There is a deep feeling of satisfaction in fixing a problem that everyone says is impossible. Our greatest power is our mind, it is knowledge that defeats the bedbug, and the sharing of knowledge makes us all equals. I’m bedbug free and we always will be. We won.

  20. Can I simply just say what a comfort to discover somebody who genuinely knows what they are discussing online.
You actually understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
More and more people need to check this out and understand this side of your story.
It’s surprising you’re not more popular because you most certainly possess the gift.
